Take any New Testament word and forget everything but your own intention to actually act on it. My God, you will say, if I am really going to do that then my whole life is ruined. Then how will I ever get ahead in the world. Herein lies the real truth of Christian scholarship. Learnedness is the miraculous invention of the church to defend itself against the Bible. To be sure that we can continue to be good Christians without letting the Bible get too close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you?
