It's actually quite simple. The Bible is pretty easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of fraudulent swindlers. We pretend we are incapable of understanding it because we realize that once we understand it we are also obligated to act on it.
Kierkegaard
"It's actually quite simple. The Bible is pretty easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of fraudulent swindlers. We pretend we are incapable of understanding it because we realize that once we understand it we are also obligated to act on it. Take any New Testament word and forget everything but your own intention to actually act on it. My God, you will say, if I am really going to do that then my whole life is ruined. Then how will I ever get ahead in the world. Herein lies the real truth of Christian scholarship. Learnedness is the miraculous invention of the church to defend itself against the Bible. To be sure that we can continue to be good Christians without letting the Bible get too close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you? Terrible it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes, it is even terrible to be left alone with the New Testament." (Kierkegaard)
