I have sometimes heard that work is seen as a curse as a result of the Fall. I don't see it that way. Genesis 3 does talk about a curse that requires working "in the sweat of the flesh" to meet the primary necessities of life. But that sweat, in my view, is not just about hard work, but about adversity. An unworkable earth, not enough rain, insect infestation, weeds. You work until you weigh an ounce and for what? A meager harvest. THAT is a curse.
But in the garden before the Fall, Adam was already put to work. He took care of the garden, knew plants and animals and gave them names. Having tasks and responsibilities is a blessing. In a Praxis advertisement I once heard "we were made to make. And I immediately thought resoundingly "yes! We are not made to wait for the weekend, or vacations, to actually live.
We are made in God's image. That means; creative, adventurous, responsible, decisive, blessing. And with a mission; take care of the earth and our fellow man.
We are made to repair, maintain, create. To breathe new life into what seemed dead with resurrection power.
Today begins my summer vacation; I get to paint our house. Yes 😉
